Week 3 Extra: What's the meaning of yellow ribbon?

The yellow ribbon symbol originated in the United States. People with families who had been involved in the war in the United States tied yellow ribbons to trees hoping that they would return home safely. Beginning with the Puritans in the 4th century, it spread to the United States, one of many stories about the origin of yellow ribbons. It has also become a symbol of honor for people far away since Tony Orlando and Dawn's song "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" was released in 1973.

In South Korea, the yellow ribbon is considered a tribute to the 2014 Ferry Sewol sinking. In hopes that the missing people from the sea would return safely, many South Korean citizens carried yellow ribbons in their bags, mobile phones, etc. or posted them on various SNSs.

There are numerous cases at home and abroad, and the yellow ribbon has become a common symbol of "wishing for the return of a distant person."
