Hello, this is Seungyoung OK in ‘Sociology in Everyday life’.
Today I'm going to make a presentation with a few references to 'Goffman's aspects of interaction,' based on my observations of interactions in public. Thinking about the most common interaction space in various public places, I came up with a "café." The cafe is originally a place for selling beverages, and is a place where people visit for various purposes, such as chatting or studying while drinking beverages. So I thought I would be able to see many types of images if I observed the interaction at the cafe.
When I first entered the cafe, many people were already sitting in the cafe doing their own work. Now I'll sort out the people in the cafe and report my observations. Their 'role' was able to see what 'activities' they were doing. A was constantly talking, leaving his laptop on. I could guess telecommuting or online lectures caused by Corona19. However, considering the fact that it was a cafe in front of the school, A was a college student and could immediately notice that he was listening to an online lecture. Perhaps because of the music from the cafe, I couldn't hear what the other person was saying. Meanwhile, B and C were talking together at the cafe. One was a man and one was a woman. They sat side by side, not facing each other like normal people, so I guessed they might be a couple. However, since it was a public place, there was no particular characteristic that I could be sure of because I did not show excessive affection. Finally, D and E looked like very close friends. We constantly took pictures of each other and took pictures of ourselves. When taking pictures of each other, they also talked about giving instructions for better pictures.
Finally, I visited a cafe in front of my school, so I could guess that most of them were Ansan people or school students. The cafe was doing a variety of behaviors as expected, and through their actions it was easy to understand what they were doing and what their relationships were. It was impressive that A, B, C, D, and E were all aware that cafes were public places and cared about their own behaviors.
I visited the cafe for a short time to observe and analyze the interactions in public places. I could feel through this short experiment that I could always be the same in all three of the images I found.
Thank you for listening to my presentation.
