Week 3. What's the meaning of Yellow Ribbon?
What's the meaning of Yellow Ribbon?
It is a
symbol that comes from a wife or family with a husband who participates in a
war in the U.S. who tied a yellow ribbon to a tree and waited for his safe
return.
There are many theories about the origin of the yellow ribbon, but the
song "She wears a yellow ribbon" tells the story of a woman wearing a
yellow ribbon in the hope that her loved one made in the 4th century will
return safely. The song was passed on to the United States by European puritans
in the early 1600s, and during the British Civil War, Puritan troops went to
war wearing yellow ribbons and bands.
In particular, the yellow ribbon has become a symbol of longing and
remembering people far away since the release of the pop song "Tie a
Yellow Ribbon Round The Old Oak Tree" released by Tony Orlando and Dawn in
1973.
This is a song about a man who was released from prison after three years
of imprisonment during the American Civil War in the 19th century, who wrote a
letter to his lover asking her to put a yellow ribbon on the oak tree if she
had not forgotten him. In the U.S., the yellow ribbon hanging movement spread
throughout the country in 1979 when 52 Americans were held hostage at the U.S.
Embassy in Iran.
In Korea, a yellow ribbon campaign was launched in hopes of their safe
return after hundreds of people went missing in the wake of the sinking of
Ferry Sewol in waters near Jindo Island on April 16, 2014. Yellow ribbons with
the phrase "One Small Movement is a Great Miracle" spread to social
networking sites such as Kakao Talk and Facebook, spreading to national
campaigns.
