week 3 extra) What’s the meaning of Yellow Ribbon?

What’s the meaning of Yellow Ribbon?

The yellow ribbons originated in the United States when families of those who participated in the war tied yellow ribbons to trees and waited for their safe return. After a song released by Tony Orlando and Dawn in 1973, it became a symbol of missing and remembering people far away. In other words, the yellow ribbon is a symbol of hope for a return. In Korea, a yellow ribbon campaign was launched on April 16, 2014, when many students went missing in the wake of the sinking of Ferry Sewol, and wished for their safe return. Many people in Korea participated in the yellow ribbon campaign and I carried yellow ribbon badges in my bag throughout middle and high school.

The yellow ribbon is a symbol of wishing for a safe return, and in Korea, it is a symbol of remembrance of the Ferry Sewol victims.
