Project 1

In our daily lives, we all carry out our roles. There are also "rules" that people should implicitly follow in public places. Keeping these 'rules' is our role in public places. According to Irving Goffman's theory, such a figure can be regarded as 'performance.'

People don't like to get out of the 'rules'. This is because the moment they break the rules, they cause discomfort to others who were playing a role.

How will others react to this if some people don't perform their roles in public places?

From now on, I will talk about my observations.

For more than half a year, corona 19 has been in fashion, so people have come to wear masks whenever they go out. But sometimes I could see people walking around without masks in Gyeongsangbuk-do where I am I located. So I decided to observe how many people didn't wear masks, and how others would think of them. I sat on a bench near my house wearing a mask and watched people pass twice a day from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Most people were wearing masks, but an average of five people didn't wear them properly, either on their chin or at all. The majority of other people's responses to it were "attention." The attention here mean an act of discomfort to those who fail to abide by the rules. It's to show the inconvenience to those who are not performing, and to point them out without a voice.

The second most popular reaction followed the attention was when two or more people were in a group, which was a "silent murmur." By sharing the actions of those who deviate from their roles with the performers and complaining about them together, there is a sense of homogeneity among the performers. This is also a pattern found in Irving Goughman's "team" element.

This observation process is about the individual's response to a person who is out of order and corresponds to the front stage among the three stages: front, back and off. This is because each individual carries out the role of a society that maintains order.

Also, the subject of observation was to provide information to me as an observer, so I could say "informer". As an observer, I can also participate in this performance and say 'spotter' by analyzing and presenting the performers.

Through this observation, I was able to better understand Dramaturgy and predict people's reactions to some extent. It was interesting to see the fact that we each strive to maintain our peaceful daily lives while playing some role among strangers.
