Week 8 Extra: Which subway stations are good? Which are bad? Why?


 I think Noksapyeong Station on subway line 6 in Korea is a good station. Noksapyeong Station was awarded the 2019 Korea Public Design Award. In order for people using the subway to experience public art naturally, an underground art garden was set up to fit the structure of the station, which was evaluated as harmonious for nature and art to coexist in the city. The design of Noksapyeong Station not only provides a pleasant feeling for citizens, but also has good accessibility because it is located in a key area of Seoul, the capital of Korea.


On the other hand, there are also bad subway stations. Many people consider Geumjeong Station on Line No. 4 as the worst station. Geumjeong Station is a transit section where Line 1 and Line 4 meet, so many people pass by. Therefore, illegal merchants sell things on the subway or in the station. On the way to and from work, the large number of people who use it makes people uncomfortable, and it is strengthened by illegal merchants.

The Interaction Assignment. What did you do? What did you learn? Was it fun?  I conducted a Breaching experiment for project 1. I was in a situation where I couldn't carry out my observations face-to-face. So I did an experiment using Kakao Talk, and this was the difference from Goffman. I broke the promise of my relationship with my friend through Kakao Talk. I replied coldly and badly to my friend(participant), who always exchanged friendly words. And my friend thought I had a complaint or something was wrong. It was the same view that Goffman looked at individuals who broke the rules in society. It was the first observation experiment, and the process of organizing the experiment was not easy. Also, it was hard to read English books, understand the contents, and do an experiment. However, I think I was able to realize and learn the meaning of the violation experiment. The reaction was also interesting after he told his friend that the experiment was a violation.

Week4) Review about my Interaction Assignment

  The place I have been observed is a café. The café involves a few tables and chairs. It is well designed for the outsiders to get interested.  When I was there, two kinds of people were in this place. They were the clerk and the customers.    The clerk welcomed the visitors politely and made some beverage and dessert. She was in smile for all the time facing the customers and mostly dressed in tidy clothes. After she got the orders, she stayed in the kitchen, which is staff only, taking a rest and looking at the CCTV occasionally. A few hours later, the other clerk got into the kitchen for the rotation.    Besides, in the main room of the café, the customers sit around the tables. Some of them drank coffee and tea talking about their boring life. Some worked with their stuff very silently. And others played the board games making loud noise. Week 1. (extra) Why are you taking this class?

 Why are you taking this class? Sociology naturally occurs in people's lives. However, I didn't have many opportunities to think about what sociology is and how it works in our lives. As  the title of this class, I was curious and wanted to learn about the sociology of everyday life.  I am used to passive learning until I come to college, so I have a fear of active learning. But this class seems to have more active learning, so I think I can change myself from pursuing passive learning. What PRACTICAL SKILLS do you expect to gain from attending it? I just got information from Wikipedia, but I've never participated in Wikipedia myself. Through this class, I want to participate in writing in Wikipedia and get writing skills.
