Project 2. Script

Project 2. Script

Hello, this is Seungyoung Ok in ‘sociology in Everyday life’.

This time, I am going to make a presentation about the change in behavior based on my observation of the dormitory restaurant among public places. Among the various public places, dormitory restaurants have become more carefully visited since covid-19 and have recently become a good place to observe the behavior of many people while eating. So we decided on a dormitory restaurant. Dormitory restaurants are places where not only students but also employees or outsiders living in dormitories can eat. If you buy a meal ticket for a meal without restriction from outsiders, you can have a meal. So I'm going to talk about what I've recorded during a week of visiting different times to observe the people's physical behaviors in the dorm cafeteria.ch

I was able to witness two subsequent behaviors of people entering the dormitory cafeteria. There was a person who came into the restaurant and chose a seat to eat and just left. To my surprise, there were often people who visited restaurants, looked through them once, and left without eating. After checking the menu of the restaurant and thinking for a while about whether they liked it or not, they would leave the restaurant or scan the seats where they could sit. On the other hand, people who came to the restaurant and ate a meal first came in and chose their seats. Since it was a restaurant in the dormitory, there were many people who usually visited to eat alone. First of all, people who eat alone look at the entire restaurant and find a proper seat. Look at both sides and choose a seat that is moderately away from people but not too far away. However, more than two people who come to the restaurant are usually not interested in choosing a seat and are free to look for a visible seat. I could tell from his non-stop appearance when he entered the restaurant. In common, however, regardless of the number of people, 'do not sit' marks attached to the seat due to covid-19 were often used to move the seats, unlike before covid-19. The change in behavior caused by the changed situation has emerged.

After choosing a seat, people looked so different when they ate. Usually, people who came alone turned on their cell phones and watched the video while eating or talking to someone with earphones on. Nearly 90 percent of the people did this and ate, and a small number of people focused on just eating. More than 90 percent of those who came over ate while talking. But I could see very few people eating with their cell phones, and I thought it was a very interesting sight. Due to the nature of the dormitory restaurant, more than half of the people really left the restaurant after eating and talking for a long time rather than spending time. So basically, it took less than 30 minutes to stay in the restaurant.

And although the number of people visiting the restaurant did not seem to be much different on weekdays and weekends, the number of people visiting the restaurant varies greatly depending on the time zone. Surprisingly, there are so many people at 12-2 or 6-7 that it is complicated and noisy, and sometimes there are many people waiting because the food is too late, but there are few people except for that time. Although about 2-3 teams visited the area, it was noticeable that the number of teams decreased significantly compared to the peak time. We could see that the "lunch time" and "dinner time" that everyone thought vaguely were very similar.

I visited the dorm cafeteria and observed and analyzed the people's physical behabior in public places. It was very interesting that there were differences in behavior, mainly depending on the number of people who visited an individual or two or more groups or restaurants. Thank you for listening to my presentation.
